The Official Game Atmosphere Thread |
Lead | |
|
Since the game atmosphere at the Arena seems to be a hot topic on this board, I thought we should have a permanent home to discuss such things as game music,
cheers, chants, the crowd, announcements ... you get the idea. Granted, we may be preaching to the choir. Then again, ya never know. So ladies and
gentlemen, the floor is yours ...

Finally , unless I missed it, the announcer didn't do the "over, it aint over till I say it is" thing when we are ahead
and I have an idea.. When Stomp is trying to get the crowd excited, lets blast Green Day. ![]()

MUSIC SUCKS | ||

I would like to beat the person playing the music. Who plays that CRAP at a hockey game. Maybe they should watch a NHL game. Country music should be banned
and that Easy Listening @#*! - UGGHHHHH! How about some ROCK - HARD ROCK not Crocodile Rock.....Tonight is the worst it's been . . . and it's been
bad.

I think we should have an official number at which time we do the Sieve chant. Something like 3 or 4 goals. Get everyone here on the same page and then start
working on the mindless mass that seem to make up a majority of the rest of the crowd.

I think we've done it at the 4 goal mark...but if its a 4-3 or 4-4 game it's kinda hard to justify it. If it's 4-0 or 4-1, sure. Don't tempt
fate any more than necessary with a 2 goal lead...
However, if the coach spoke the truth on the coaches show, maybe we should all be singing Kumbaya, holding hands & lighting candles instead of chanting & heckling at the other teams. We should all be so thankful the other team is here that we shouldn't say boo to them. He says it's "just amateurs" so the crowd shouldn't be saying "who cares" & "go home". You know what? If it's "just amateurs" take the beer out of the arena, don't take sponsorship money from the beer companies & stop pimping your players out on sponsorship appearances. The organization is making (I'm sure) a good amount of money off these amateurs without much in return other than a chance at a partial scholarship (which some already have before they get here & maybe would have anyway) at a meatgrinder environment in college hockey. Stop charging (on average) more for tickets than any other team in the league for the smallest rink & worst sight lines. Stop charging pro prices on amateur jerseys. Stop $hitting on the true fans by ignoring every suggestion. Bottom line is nothing will change at the arena as long as the longest serving employee is there. As long as the organization is making money it will continue to be easier for ownership to not make a change instead of switching it up & possibly making less for a season or two in transition. It makes it even tougher to make a change when a huge controlling faction comes from one family. It's more apparent when someone who was hired to great trumpeting of her hockey background starts to make a few changes in the music & was gone from the organization within a few games after. Maybe the goal of the organization is to sellout the arena with nothing but corpies...at which point they'll finish their transition to being complete sell-outs.

I sometimes think it is only a matter of time before padded mittens will be required to be brought to the games to muffle the sound when fans do clap so it
isn't too noisy and wake up those sleeping, reading, or just having a good old fashioned gab fest.
I keep wondering when the dictated game night music will be that energetic Pomp and Circumstance or that adrenaline pumping March from Athalia.

Speaking of "who cares", the so called reason the opposing players are not announced goes, a little research to date indicates Omaha, Sioux City,
Lincoln, Tri-City, and Des Moines still announce the opposing team starting line up. Since the Stampede in their infinite wisdom decided to stop announcing
the opposing team line up and as coach said on the Monday radio show, "Over half the teams don't announce the players", then all those who
don't must be in the East Division. Or perhaps since we don't introduce the other team line up did coach mean to say over half the teams don't
introduce the starting Stampede players.
LOL, I wonder if we yelled "who cares" when our starting line up is announced if the powers what am in charge would step in and make the annoucer stop introducing our players if all they are upset about are a few chants? I bet the Storm franchise is thankful every day their game atmosphere isn't controlled by our head shed.

I think I might have to break down & go to a Storm game just to compare. Maybe they're not thankful for having the other teams...

I agree with the coach. In the pros (pro anything), it's part of the job. The devolution of sportsmanship in general is both sad and sickening.
If you want to stop selling beer at the games, that'd be fine with me. I go to watch the games, not to swill overpriced beer and be rude to the players providing the entertainment. The overall behavior of many in the crowd most nights is shameful and embarrassing. Well there you go, I have provided my honest opinion, which seems to be contrary to everyone else's. I am sure you will proceed to tear me a new one, which will only prove my point. Have at it.

Nothing wrong with having your opinion. This is only your 2nd post since the switch to Yuku & you've basically said the same thing in both.
What is your idea to help the atmosphere? Do you mean you are satisfied with the current music being played & quiet as a church crowd? Bring something to the discussion here about what can be changed to improve the crowd response & participation. The few people with your same view are most likely the ones that look at the people (with a sour lemon face) actually cheering & making noise and then turn around & pout because all this noise is making it hard to concentrate. Is your solution to keep the building as quiet as possible except for the first 15-20 seconds after the home team scores? |

what you guys don't like the "sioux falls public library". the atmosphere is a joke. as far as the storm go you don't need to go unless you
like kid games after every td. if the herd could get half the energy from the fans that the storm get they may lose the "family" tag. ownership likes
the fans that don't know crap.
it keeps those who are remotely interested coming back. then after 5-6 yrs they may learn what the penaltys are and not go nuts when offsides is called. that still kills me. the only bright spot the team has is its coach(kid aside). can't wait till i hear "when's halftime?" again. |

Section A Crazy wrote: Let it be known that I appreciate your respectful response. I agree with everyone that the music is absolutely dreadful. Play AC/DC, Metallica, Guns and Roses..etc. Absolutely. Good music anyway and lends itself to energizing the crowd. Couldn't agree more with everyone on this. I have no problem whatsoever with cheering and making noise. Absolutely none. However, it can be done without heckling and jeering the other team. The referees/linesmen have been and always will be fair game, or at least until they get there heads out of their asses and get in the right position to make the correct call if necessary. But calling the opposing teams player a loser as he goes into the penalty box is simply a show of poor sportsmanship and is completely unnecessary. Especially when his team is up 5-0. It's rude and uncalled for. What makes him any more of a loser than the Stampede player that's likely to go to the box less than a minute later because the team has this weird ass thing where they like to shoot themselves in the foot by taking penalties while on the power play? Also keep in mind how many corporate dinks are in the crowd. They got their tickets free or almost free, come to only 10 games, and sit there and talk while drinking their $5 beers. I hate that as much as anyone. Fortunately that's usually only a problem above, say, row 10 or so. The more die hard fans, who actually watch the game, sit below that level. The people around me are great, but they are not the reason I go. I go to watch the game, not to talk, not to high five and feel a since of camaraderie with the loudmouth drunks that sit a few rows up and badmouth the other team when they don't deserve it. Without the other team, you don't have a game. So they do deserve a measure of (everyone's) respect. It would help if the fans were more knowledgeable. But beyond season ticket holders, most people that go to games only go to a few. Either because they don't care to buy season tickets, can't afford to...whatever. And these people probably don't go to or watch any hockey beyond the few games they see. Some may prefer watching on B2 or listening on the radio from home, where they don't have to pay for concessions. I'm willing to bet that if the Stampede played somewhere where more than 5% of the fans could see the whole ice, more people would come. Which is why I don't support the proposed event center in spite of the fact that I think SF needs one really bad. That's a thread someone should start, it would be a pretty interesting conversation I think. |

I agree with you 100% about calling other players losers for taking a penalty...if it's a run of the mill deal. I'm not against calling them that if
they pull a cheap & dirty play...and I'd bet you'd be on the same side of the fence as I am on that one. I'd guess you're thinking of the
Omaha deal with that, never liked it. I haven't heard it "loser" being thrown out indiscriminately in the area I'm in. What section are you
in?
What I'm talking about is getting in a goalies head after he gives up a goal, you can't tell me he doesn't hear it when 2000 people tell him about it. Also, being a goalie he's automatically probably a head case & it will gain an advantage for the home team. If he turns it around & becomes unstoppable, all the better for him. I have more respect for him then anyway. Singing a song at the goalie like we do at the beginning of the second is along those lines too. Do I like that the easiest thing to get across is "You suck"? No, but if you try to get something else together that's easy to catch on & easy to understand (nothing better than someone trying to heckle with a 12 word sentence) you're limited to the only other option of "loser" or the always classy "F the Sioux" or "Sioux's a wh*re". That's why the stance that "who cares" & "go home" is being viewed as so disrespectful really bugs me. My gosh, how thin is the skin on some people? It's all in fun and yes, I'm glad the other team is there. That's why I enjoy so much watching college & NHL games because then I can see guys that have played in the league, regardless of the team they played for. I want to address the "loser" thing specifically here. There are only a few players I can think of that should have had that label & they all have good reasons, not for something as silly as playing for another team. Boll because he was such a drama queen on the ice & would rather embellish a non-foul than give a little effort to score (now he's a one dimensional player for a marginal team)Follmer because he's a thug with an attitude problem and kicked the crap needlessly out of a teammate Both Conboys, do you really need an explanation? The following are not losers, but I'm sure some uneducated hockey fans would argue it. These are the guys that we loved to hate but hated that we loved them: Femenella because he relished his role of the heel, he saluted & acknowledged opposing fans every time he started to hear it Magers because even though he was a crybaby & whiner, I felt bad when one of his own fans didn't know who he was when we were heckling him ("Who's Marty?") Wilson because he was such a good punching bag for Donnie & in his last game in the Arena he saluted the crowd as he was skating off after being ejected BJ Greaves because he always brought it Troy Brummett because even though he was an overager he still liked to fight 15 & 16 year olds, plus who doesn't love a midget? Hohl, see Greaves McCauley again, relished being a heel All of these guys loved the heckling & IIRC Femenella actually mentioned loving hearing it from the SF fans. Notice most are from the hated Muskies. The chanting & heckling will usually either get in their heads & make it easier for the hometeam or it will make them bear down & try that much harder, which in turn should make the home team bear down too. At worst, it does nothing for either team. Profanity, definitely should not be a part of any chant or heckling. Does it slip out, occasionally, but again it shouldn't be a regular menu item. Hearing a 2-4 year old throw the F bomb out is funny once, unfortunately that age group sees someone giggling & decides more is funnier. Which it is, unless it's your kid. And you're a mom. I actually disagree with you in regards to the officials. I feel like they should, normally, be jeered & heckled in rare circumstances. No one heckles & jeers the goal judge or penalty box official. However, it's become apparent in this league that the officials are mostly inept & over their heads. Then they get a god complex and try to overcompensate for nearly empty jock straps. In that case, it's time to unload on them. Again, in this league, that usually has them catching hell at about the 2 minute mark of the 1st period. Yelling at the home team. If they're screwing up, they shouldn't be afraid to hear it from the home fans. The home fans have more right to give them heck than visiting fans anyway. I might be pi$$ed because it always seems like the PP stinks or they only shoot into the chest, but I'm still going to come back for the next game. |

Sec A beat me to the response about calling a player out who is out on the ice throwing cheap shots at either team. If a player is out on the ice and doing
junk like that, why not call them out? Keep in mind that our players will also feed off this.
I will disagree with Sec A on the Magers response though. Marty was a headcase and probably still is if he's playing hockey somewhere. I actually heard someone say once that they were glad SF has never had a goon on our team. I could only laugh at the person when they said this. Who wouldn't have called Finley a goon if he were playing for anyone but SF? This also shows how narrow minded people in SF can be. Maybe people would enjoy the game more if they took the horse blinders off. I told Kraut the other night that I think one problem we've seen over the last few years is the fact that when the USHL moved up to Teir 1, we started to see a lot less 2-3 year players in the league. Because of this, the fans are seeing a lot less players that they recognize from year to year. Could you imagine if Femenella had been a one year player? His love/hate status would have never grown into what it was. I can't name one player in the league right now that has that same kind of status. Also because of this, I've felt the rivalry between SF and SC hasn't been the same because the one year players don't truely experience the rivalry (although it could be different this year if we end up playing SC in the first round). |

Moving to tier 1 isn't it. Ongoing pressure for kids to stay home with a potential h.s. championship on the line sounds good at the time.
If they are able to get a scholarship after one year in ushl and move on to chase dreams in the NHL someday wouldn't YOU go? College hockey comentators don't even like to reference the USHL. |

The crowd seemed a bit more into the game tonight. Music seemed much better as well, still a few songs that had me scratching my head. Because it's been
such an issue on the boards here, I took the time to write down the song playlist tonight. So, without furthur adu, here is the list:
1st Period Breakin the Law Unknown song with lots of drums Shout Packers TD song (sorry, don't know the name of it but have never really liked the song (no I'm not a Viking fan)) Roll Out the Barrels (organ music) Don't Bring Me Down Raise a Little Hell TNT Too Much Time On My Hands Cha Cha Slide Big Shot (Ind 1st Goal) Fortunate Son Wipeout Funkeytown Second Period Aint That a Shame Insane in the Membrane Mony Mony Don't Do Me Like That There Goes My Hero Calling Dr Love Are You Gonna Go My Way Little Willy We're Not Gonna Take It Get a Haircut (and Get a Real Job) Rock Me Gently Micky Keep Your Hands To Yourself 3rd Period Born To Be Wild It's My Life Start Me Up Some Nickelback song (they all sound alike to me) Unbelievable We Will Rock You One More Time Don't Impress Me Much (2nd Ind goal) Another song I don't know the name of Cotton Eyed Joe Hard Days Night Got Me Under Pressure Twist and Shout Should I Stay or Should I Go As I said before, it was better tonight, but songs like Rock Me Gently are just putting people to sleep with how quiet they are. 3rd period music needs to be much more edgy IMO. Songs like Hell's Bells and Welcome to the Jungle should be played in a tight game like tonight's during the 3rd, not Got Me Under Pressure, Twist and Shout, and Should I Stay or Should I Go. |

The game music has been a sore spot with me for the last few years. I agree, it has been better the last few games. The problem is we've got some dance party DJ who thinks he/she can get away with playing the same crap that goes over at a high school dance. Hockey is a rock n roll sport. It's not golf or tennis where you have to be vewy vewry qwiiiiet. If the Canaries want to put some lounge lizard and his keyboard in a gazebo playing cover songs that are sleep inducing even for baseball, let 'em. Hockey is fast paced, hard hitting and the music should reflect that. It should help fire up the fans and the players, and reflect the events on the ice. I hear too many novelty songs that are polarizing: people either love 'em or mostly hate 'em. I cannot believe they played Billy Ray Daddy Montana Cyrus a few games ago. Is that not the most universally hated song in the world??? "Rock Me Gently" by Andy Kim: a lame song when it was popular in the 70s, but are we pandering to a corporate sponsor because it's the soundtrack to an equally lame Jeep commercial? And "Mickey" again tonight? Tonight, I heard something good: "Another Brick In The Wall" after a big save late in the game! Perfect! The list below has been updated a few times, but is essentially the same list and comments that has been submitted to the front office on at least two occasions. I admit not everybody has the same taste in music and not everybody may agree with my comments. Fire back if you'd like, but for what it's worth: STUFF THAT SHOULD BE PERMANENTLY BANNEDGlen Frey / "The Heat Is On": Omaha's goal song should NEVER be played in the Arena "Who Let The Dogs Out": novelty songs are either loved (by 8 year olds) or hated (by everyone else). This is one of 'em and it serves no purpose. The Chicken Dance": WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY??? This ain't a wedding dance, it's a hockey game! See above. "Mickey": 'nuff said. Most rap/dance music: OK, so I hear some of it during NHL games on CenterIce. But breakdancers perform to this stuff during Skyforce games. There's no breakdancing in hockey! Pink / "Get This Party Started": the NBA used this in their league promotions a few years back. It reminds me of the NBA. I want to think hockey. ANYTHING by the Village People, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears and Miley Billy Joe Bob Ray Hanna Cyrus Montana QUESTIONABLE AT TIMES "Cotton Eyed Joe": don't get me wrong. I don't have a problem with it at all. BUT, if Cotton Eye Joe's seat is EMPTY, neither he or his friends are sitting there, why spotlight it when the song is played? Everybody looks to his seat to see him dance when they hear the song, and when he's not there ... isn't it like dropping the puck with nobody in the faceoff circle? Play the song, but if Joe's not there, don't spotlight his seat. That cha-cha-slide dance club mix thing: See above. This had become Dancin' Jimmy O's song. I think people hear it now, and expect to see Jimmy dance. When he doesn't … kinda takes away from something that had become a special in-game event. Sure, people clap to it, but does it get 'em out of their seats? It might work in a club, but not a sports arena. And why do we have to be subjected to this thing more than once a game? Having said that, I have heard it played in NHL arenas so it's probably not going away anytime soon. SUGGESTIONSAC/DC / "Hells Bells" AC/DC / "Thunderstruck" AC/DC / "You Shook Me All Night Long" Bachman-Turner Overdrive / "Takin' Care Of Business" ... post fight/scuffle Bachman-Turner Overdrive / "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" Pat Benatar / "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" ... post-fight, first stoppage after a big hit or save Beastie Boys / "You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Party" Black Eyed Peas / "Let's Get It Started" Blur / "Song 2 (Woo Hoo)" Bon Jovi / "It's My Life" Bon Jovi / "Livin' On A Prayer" Bon Jovi / "Never Say Die" The Calling / "Wherever You Will Go" ... ESPN/ABC's theme song for the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals ... post-game after the last home game of the season Kenny Chesney / "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem" ... if one of our guys loses his jersey in a fight (?) OK, maybe not Alice Cooper / "No More Mr. Nice Guy" ... post fight/scuffle Alice Cooper / "Poison" ... good intro The Clash / "Rock The Casbah" Def Leppard / "Let's Get Rocked" Dio / "Holy Diver" ... another good intro Europe / "The Final Countdown" ... between regulation and OT/OT and shootout Genesis / "Misunderstanding" ... when a penalty is called on the Stampede Sammy Haggar / "I Can't Drive 55" Head East / "Never Been Any Reason" Elton John / "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" ... self explanatory Kernkraft 400 / "Zombie Nation" KISS / "Detroit Rock City" KISS / "Rock 'n' Roll All Night" Metallica / "Enter Sandman" Offspring / "Keep 'Em Separated" ... post fight/scuffle Queen / "We Will Rock You" Tom Petty / "I Won't Back Down" Tom Petty / "Runnin' Down A Dream" ... another good intro Pink Floyd / "Another Brick In The Wall" ... after a big save Ram Jam / "Black Betty" Rolling Stones / "Start Me Up" Scorpions / "Rock You Like A Hurricane" Bruce Springsteen / "Born To Run" Bruce Springsteen / "Radio Nowhere" Bruce Springsteen / "The Rising" Star Wars / Darth Vader's Imperial March Steam / "Na Na, Hey Hey, Goodbye" ... I think SC is using this as a victory song, so maybe when an opposing player is sent to the penalty box or ejected from the game Steppenwolf / "Born To Be Wild" ... the ORIGINAL version for cryin' out loud! The Who / "Baba O'Reilly (Teenage Wasteland)" ... "CSI: NY" theme The Who / "Who Are You?" ... "CSI" theme The Who / "Won't Be Fooled Again" ... "CSI: Miami" theme Van Halen / "Dreams" Van Halen / "On Top Of The World" ... post-game victory song Van Halen / "Right Now" ... between regulation and OT/OT and shootout War / "Why Can't We Be Friends" ... the ORIGINAL version, post fight/scuffle ZZ Top / "Legs" ... good intro
