AJB1970 wrote:Very interesting! I posted this on the Game 1 thread, "True the paper said Clay would get some playing time but also remember coach said on the Monday's show the team can go far with Eric." Went to the Stampede site and listened to the "plan" as of 04/06 and coach's actual words, when discussing the playoffs, were, "Eric is further along at this time" and "We have a better chance in the long run with Eric". The Lincoln paper says this, " Kevin Hartzell said his plan entering the playoffs was to play each goaltender until he lost a game, and he's still leaning that way. That would mean Witt would start in Game 3." When did this plan take shape, late in the 3rd period when Walters really sealed the game with an empty net goal and victory was all but set in concrete by the final buzzer?

I don't think Eric Hartzell should have been allowed to be on the Stampede. He should have been on another team or league all together.

He was originally drafted by Sioux City & I'm sure would have performed incredibly on any other team without the pressure of playing for his father.
As such, there's no rule against it. And any such rule would be sure to invite a large lawsuit against the league. No point in that, and really if all parties involved had been able to truly keep that relationship from carrying over to anything hockey related there wouldn't have been a problem. However, the season started out bad. Some fans booed when Eric was still starting after a string of poor outings & it really was all over at that point. Kevin wasn't able to be blind to the relationship on the ice at that point & it seems like he was bound & determined he was going to play Eric in every game possible just to show everyone he's an elite goaltender. Problem was, IMO, Eric put enough pressure on himself to be perfect that it all fell apart when it wasn't (which was frequently), the team in front of him wasn't good enough defensively to help out in times perfection wasn't there and Kevin, I believe, allowed a huge rift to develop in the dressing room. Now, again IMO, that rift has created a situation where I believe a player may have gotten in someones face after a meltdown during a game & that player has now been relegated to a healthy scratch status indefinitely. Unfortunately, I'd be surprised to see that player come back, even though he's an outstanding player who could be on the 2nd line next year. I've also heard whispers that a number of players have expressed their intentions that they won't come back if Eric were to be on the team again next year. With him heading to Quinnipiac that scenario won't play out. But it does bring up an interesting question. What in the hell has been going on behind the scenes all season long that a fair number of kids are willing to take a chance on their dream ending rather than play with him? I don't believe it's going to be all on Eric that these kids feel that way, I suspect more of their decision is based on how the head cheese has handled it throughout the year. It's really too bad that in the span of one season a portion of the fan base has gone from the belief that Kevin is a very fair & phenomenal coach to something considerably less than that. |

So what you are saying is Eric can not handle the pressure and In your oppinion should not be on the stampede? Or Eric can not handle the pressure and his Dad
should have done something sooner to help his son develope the skill and mindset to play at the next level?

I have the Lincoln Stars on my facebook and Twitter... They hope Eric will start so they can tear him apart to win and see him throw a fit like a baby.
I don't think Eric should play against the Stars. If we win, then yeah give him another chance at the next team. I think he does try his best to impress his father and the team and goes a little too far when he can't control the puck. I just believe he is trying too hard to be the best goalie under his dad so everyone is proud of him. I've heard people boo Eric. Someone people even say they won't clap for him when they introduce him as the starter goalie. |

Alot of people don't clap for him. You earn it and well he lost alot of it. Some his fault mostly the coaches fault. Telling someone they are elite when
the are average or below in the USHL is not fair to them IMO

sfstampedefan wrote: Speaking of introducing players I wonder if this organization will give the arena announcer permission to introduce the Lincoln starting players in the same manner Lincoln did the Stampede players in their arena last Friday and Saturday. I think it is time for this organization rejoin the other 11 teams in the league not only during the playoff games here but the future regular seasons and return the same respect and recognition for the opponent as the home team shows respect and recognition for the Stampede players in their facility.

Eric is not the only problem. There is also a problem when players are benched, continuously (Knoepoke and Accettura last year) and now apparantly big forward, for running afowl of a coach who says he's "all about the kids" when in reality he's "all about HIS kid". Can you blame the rest of the team for not wanting to return to that atmosphere? I like Eric. I don't like his tantrums, and meltdowns, but would those have happened if he had played on another team? I don't think so. Playing for your father, cannot be easy, especially when it appears the whole season was about promoting YOU at the expense of everyone else. As for Quinnipiac,........from what I hear there are "issues"....and there are ALREADY 4 goaltenders on that roster. Hmmmmmm..... I'll go ahead and say what a lot of people are thinking.... maybe it's time for both Hartzells to move along to somewhere else. |

"Move along" I'd say not so much Kevin as the defensive coach who hasnt taught a defensive style since he arrived. Kevins mistake was having a
son on the team, Even if there is no favoritivism , just the possibility of the controversy should have been enough to halt it. The front office didnt show any
more wisdom in it either.

I don't undetstand why people hate the Hartzel's so much. I've lived in SF for 6 years now, and the Herd were not good until KH arrived. Has the
USHL passed by coach, and we need a new coach? Is it because of Eric? Do we need more high end college bound kids? I attend games and am a huge hockey fan
in general ( Gophers, NHL), but am confused on this one...

I think we should save our get a new coach judgement for the the elder Hartzell till next year when he coaches a team without another Hartzell on the roster.
He did bring us an Andy and a Clark......

Sundawg,... You're right. I stand corrected. Let's give the elder Hartzell another year. I got to thinking after my post and coaching your son is no
party either. He's tried to do what's best for Eric, but he's promoted him too much, but fathers tend to do that. So I'm reversing myself, and
lets see what he does next year, providing there is only ONE Harzell on the Stampede.
Vanek26: There's no "hatred" for the Hartzells, but perceptions are what they are, opinions vary, and this is just a forum for civil discussion between fans of Stampede hockey, and even though we here have conflicting opinions and opposing views, we all love Stampede Hockey. |

Sooo, tonights game.
It was exciting. I'd say their third period effort was their best single period this season. Take away that ugly shorthanded goal & the 3rd period effort would have won the game. Other than that goal & the GWG I thought the D was doing a good job & Witt was playing out of his mind. I think another effort like this with the start on Friday (there's no way a sane & reasonable coach makes a goalie change after a game like this, more on this in a bit) & Clay moves up to NHL draft attention for this year. If the coach makes a goalie change for Friday it should effectively end Witts time in Sioux Falls. How could you play for a coach knowing you could play a nearly flawless game & still lose your spot? Not one of the goals tonight was because of anything he did wrong. He even knew before anyone else that the puck went in the goal in the 2nd by sneaking under the net because he knew he had the post sealed. He plays with the kind of poise & confidence I haven't seen since Briggs. All in all it was a good game to watch once the 3rd period got going. The team played well overall, really only giving up 2 goals due to mistakes & 2 that were very good goals. |

Lincoln outshot the Stampede 38 to 30 with Anthony Borelli making 27 saves and Witt stopping 34 shots. Witt was key for the Stampede, withstanding a first period in which he saw his team outshot 14 to six. "He played fine, I'm happy for Clay," Hartzell said. "He got a win for us [Saturday] and that's great. I'm really proud
of Clay. He played well. I'm sure we'll turn it back to Eric [Hartzell] in the next one."

I'm happy we were not swept and that the guys played hard and well (Leaders get more from their men) and it wasn't a cake walk for Lincoln. . With Eric in net ......it's probably good bye time. Dang, I would like to see more of Witt.
